• Mining

    • Mining gives us the stuff we need to produce energy, houses, cars, computers, and thousands of other products. But mining can be nasty business.

About 40 percent of all steel produced is created through recycling. Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world and can be recycled forever.

    A good concept

Steel recycling drastically reduces the social and environmental impacts of steelmaking. It saves an enormous amount of energy and water, and the mining of iron ore is not necessary…

    CO2 reducing

…at current rates, steel recycling avoids using 50 percent more iron than the world produces in a year. It also avoids the same CO2 emissions that the global airline industry emits in one and a half year. That’s 3 percent of global CO2 emissions.

    Closed loop production

Steel recycling makes possible what is often called “closed loop production” - a material eco-system where no materials are wasted but where everything is re-used over and over again.

    It’s on the rise

Recycling really matters - and it's improving! In Europe, steel packaging is now being recycled at a rate of 70 percent, more than double compared to 1993.
